Did you know the Google supports the web advertising of over 6000 charities around the world through its Google Grants scheme?

Organisations that receive a Google Grant are awarded an in-kind online advertising account through Google AdWords that can be used in a variety of ways, including general fundraising and recruitment activities, outreach etc

Google cites the following examples of Google Grants participants that have achieved great success with the programme.

For example, the US Fund for UNICEF’s e-commerce site, Shop UNICEF, experienced a 43 per cent increase in sales over the previous year, while CoachArt – supporting children with life-threatening illnesses through art and athletics programmes – has seen a 60 to 70 per cent increase in volunteers.

The value of the advertising grant is determined by the success of the AdWords advertising campaigns it funds. The average grantee receives the equivalent value to $300/month but a well-managed successful campaigns will be funded at much higher levels – up to $10,000/month.

As with any grant-based program, there are rules, regulations and constraints to control eligibility and ensure appropriate use. For UK-based charities, these will be found on the Google UK Grants site . However the main eligibility criteria are UK charitable status and less than 50% commercial (earned) revenue.

If you are in contact with any charities, make them aware of Google Grants – the program is available in a number of countries – and suggest they put in an application as soon as possible!

Twas weeks before Christmas, when all through the web
All the retailers were scurrying to get their sites read
The products were shown by pictures with great care
In hopes that the shoppers soon would be there

Their anxiety so high they doubled up on their meds
While visions of dollar signs danced in their heads
One retailer settled down for a short power nap
When suddenly he awoke with quite a quick snap

He sprang to his PC with such a great clatter
His partner said, “Hey dude, what’s the matter?”
He booted up Windows and before it could crash
Opened up Google quick as a flash

He typed in his keywords all in row
Hoping his site would appear down below
But what to his horrified eyes should appear
All his competitors’ websites, but his nowhere near

A thought he remembered to his mind quickly came
And he whistled and shouted and called out a name

“Now dash away, dash away and make a quick call
Get WSI to add our keywords all
For Pay-per-Click ads will help us get found
Before all our inventory has to be marked down!”

Andy came in and went straight to his work
and filled in the keywords then turned with a jerk
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
“All done” he said and from the chair he arose

He sprang right to Google, typed a keyword with a whistle
and watched the retailer’s ad rise like a missile
And they heard him exclaim as he drove out that night
“You’ll have a great Christmas, with a first page found website.”

From a WSI colleague, inspired by Clement Clark Moore – “A Visit from St. Nicholas”

Google has quietly introduced a neat feature to its Google Adwords advertising platform specifically for users of mobile phones with a full HTML browser (such as the iPhone, Android-powered devices or those running Palm OS).

The advertiser can now add a clickable telephone number as an additional line of their ad, which is only displayed to mobile users.

Viewers can then simply click the phone number to call and connect directly with the business. It’s a quick and convenient way for a potential customer to reach you while they’re on the move.

Recently this service has been extended in the UK to cover both geographic phone numbers and 0800, 0843, 0844, 0845 and 0870 numbers.

Every website owner has the continual challenges of not only bringing new visitors to their site, but attracting them back again!

Now Google is launching a new feature within Google Adwords called Remarketing which will enable you to advertise only to those people who have already visited your site, or your YouTube channel!

For example, if you’re a search advertiser, you can use remarketing to create an integrated campaign strategy. After driving traffic to your site with search ads, you can then remarket to those users who visited your site by showing them tailored ads on sites throughout the Google Content Network.

The remarketing ads can reinforce key messages or highlight special offers that will then draw those visitors back to your site as they continue to surf the internet.
